The trend of using medical marijuana is rapidly increasing as more states legalize medical and recreational usage. But what about using CBD and pets in the comfort of your home? Is it safe for pets? The marijuana that you use – whether medical or recreational – should not be given to your pets. First, they are more susceptible to cannabis than humans. But more because there are specially-designed products just for animals.
Many CBD product manufacturing companies are introducing their range of CBD products for pets which contain no harmful ingredient that could produce adverse effects on your dog’s health. Read on to find what conditions can be treated with CBD and how you can manage to give CBD to your pet in an appropriate dosage amount.
Note: CBD and pets go together, but not THC. Only use products specially designed for animals.
Just like us, animals get sick and experience discomfort and pain, so they too need proper treatments. In recent years, CBD has been used as a medication for animals too. The CBD-infused products have shown wonderful results with animals. Now, CBD is widely used for the treatment of pet ailments such as arthritis or body pains. Arthritis is a very painful situation for both older and younger dogs. They cannot even walk properly due to inflammation associated with arthritis.
It is a fact that animals have also shown signs of brain-related problems like insomnia and CBD has come up as a potential treatment for such conditions. And more than dogs and cats, there are even CBD products for horses, ferrets and rabbits!
There are now a wide variety of CBD products for animals, including capsules, oils, tinctures, treats and even CBD-infused water. What will work best for your pet is whatever product they will take! Most animals are not capsule or pill takers, so oils and tinctures might be the best bet. Keep in mind that even though pets might have the same conditions as we do (pain, anxiety, seizures, insomnia and more), their treatment is quite a bit different. Since their bodies are much smaller than human bodies, paying attention to dosage is very important. Starting slow and adding slowly is the best way to find their unique dosage.
Even with recommendations from your vet and the dosage suggestions from the product’s manufacturer, you and your pet are going are going to be the best ones to determine the exact unique amount for your four-legged friend.
It has been reported that dogs have more cannabinoid receptors in the brain than humans. And unlike humans, they can be more sensitive to the toxic effects. CBD works with the endocannabinoid receptors in the peripheral and central nervous system, to maintain the body’s balance and keep it in a healthy state.
It is safe to give your pet “Human CBD Oil” as there is no difference in how the pet CBD and human CBD oil is manufactured except labelling. However, it is essential to keep in mind that you need to use smaller doses for dogs than the recommended amount on the bottle and don’t give any cannabis oil to your pets which contains more than 0.3% THC.
It is better to be moderate and don’t give them too much CBD to avoid any incidental THC toxicity. Most CBD products contain 0.3% of THC , so your pet can experience mild THC toxicity when ingested CBD in a higher amount. You can check the dosage section to understand the right amount of dosage for your pet.
There is no particular time for giving CBD to the pets as. Depending on the size, weight, and ailment you want to treat with CBD oil, the frequencies of dosage varies greatly. It is better to give the dose once or twice a day to your canine companion for behavioral problems and anxiety but after the initial testing phase. While, the ideal time of dose for dogs to relieve pain is every 8 hours or when needed.
It is better to consult your vet before giving CBD to your cats or dogs. Until recently a lot of vets would have turned pet owners away from cannabis-related products. But more and more are realizing the benefits and even stock CBD products in their clinics. Talk to your vet? It’s becoming more and more common that vets are actually the ones initiating the conversation! So, yes – talk to your pet’s vet.
Using cannabis for pets sounds unnatural; still, there is a huge potential for treating various health conditions with CBD. Our pets are an important part of our family, and it is essential to keep track of their activities, ailments, and wellness needs. Everyone wants to keep their pets healthy and active with a playful mood which is possible with CBD.
If your pet does ingest your medical marijuana of any kind, it’s important to call your vet immediately. If it’s off hours or the weekend, do not put it off. Call the 24-hour veterinarian and follow their instructions. Your pet ultimately will be fine, but depending on what and how much was ingested there could be different treatments your vet will give.
